UNIT ONE EVALUATIONFor Unit One, I researched a range of different artists for inspiration, Paul Strand, Matthieu Bourel and Francesca Woodman were a few. I went onto Pinterest and explored the work of these different artists to get some ideas on the type of work I want to create for the different types of themes. I think that I choose photographers to explore which had a similar theme that ran through there work and also mine. I think that this made it quite easy to choose certain photographer to look at for inspiration. For example I looked at the work of Jasper James in the section of abstraction section and then came across the work of Matthieu Bourel when researching artists for the section of contrast and noticed that their work is very similar. I found most of the artists for each of the different sections on Pinterest but also just browsing on the internet and looking on the Tallis GCSE Photography Page.
I explored a range of different themes but the ones I liked the most are Abstraction, Contrast and Absurd. For abstraction. I started off by looking at some abstraction pieces of work on Pinterest to get some ideas on the kind of work I want to create. Once I pinned a few images I liked and thought were interesting, I searched up the photographer and looked at all their pieces they had created. The two photographers I decided to explore in abstraction was Paul Strand and Francesca Woodman. I firstly explored Paul strands work and realised that one thing that was a common theme in his work was shadows and lines. So I decided to capture some images based on the theme of line and shadows using an iPod. Then I looked at the work of Francesca Woodman. With her work, I noticed that the theme which ran through her work was lines. This was a similarity to the work of Paul Strand. I decided that this was gonna run through as a theme in my work but also have shadows in some of them too. In the Contrast Section, I decided to start off by looking at "Chiaroscuro" and exploring how that fitted into images. I researched chiaroscuro on the internet and also look on Pinterest to find some images based on it and find some artists that include chiaroscuro. One Artist that I came across was Tom Hunter. One thing I liked about Hunter's worked was that the light was shinning on just one part of the body. So I decided that I would take some images based on this. The first set of images I took were taken with a DSLR camera. These images worked and followed the rules of chiaroscuro. However I didn't like some of these images so I decided to research some other artists and came across Jasper James' work. With Jasper James' work, I liked how he merged one image into another. So I decided to create some images like this on Photoshop. I preferred the work of Jasper James then the work of artists like Chiaroscuro. However I used the work I created inspired by both of them as my final pieces. For the Absurd Personal project, I stared off looking on Pinterest to find some inspiration on the path I wanted to go down. Once pinning a few images, I decided to pick out two images from the ones I pinned and then evaluate them. By doing this it would allow me to see and explore the different parts that make an image absurd. Next I took images based on the ones I evaluated on my page. I focused mainly on hiding a part of a body in most of these images s this is what I thought the main kind of theme was in the images I evaluated. However after doing this I got bored of doing the same thing over and over so I went back on Pinterest and one thing that came up quite frequently was signs and them being used in humorous way in images. This is where I came along the photographer David Shrigley. I explored the work of David and found in nearly every one of his images he had a humorous sign in it. Like before, I decided to evaluate an image of his to see what I could do to follow the same pattern David did. Then I went and took some images both in school and at home which had humorous signs in them. After doing this I did get a bored of doing signs over and over again as it didn't excite me that much and it didn't intrigue me.so I decided to look at Forced perspective and I enjoyed this as I found it fun and it interested me more then the things I did before. I looked on the internet to find some artists and came along this artist called Slinkachu. I then took some images based on forced perspective in school making sure I captured one image bigger than the other. However I still wasn't feeling like I was doing much and I wasn't very interested in this either after numerous experiments. So next I went back onto Pinterest and found another artists I liked the look of more compared to the others. This artist was Matthieu Bourel. This artists was similar to the one I looked at in Contrast so I felt more comfortable looking at his work and creating work based on his. Bourel's work had the theme of fragments running through all his work and I felt comfortable doing this in my work. The work I created on Bourels work were used as my final pieces. During the whole of Unit one, I carried out a range of different types of techniques and processes. These were cyanotypes, camera obsucra, photograms/rayograms, pinhole photography, light painting, multiple portraits and chemigrams, DSLR camera, iPod, Chemicals, Pinole camera, Photoshop, and photographer paper. I didn't use photoshop as much in the first half of Unit One as I wasn't too confident and not too sure how to use it. However towards the end of the unit I was becoming more confident with the use of it and used it in most of my final pieces for the end Personal Projects. However I felt comfortable using the other equipment. |
