What Makes A Good Photograph?
A good photograph expresses the photographer's intention in a lot of ways. This can be through light and composition, etc. The photographer is trying to show friendship and companionship through the different techniques. Light in photographs is a big thing. The darker colours in photographs like the black and grey represent mystery. This is because black is a mysterious colour and is associated with fear and the unknown. However the lighter colours like the white differ with this. White is a colour that represents hope and safety. It is the light at the end of your tunnel. The colours always creates a certain atmosphere in a photograph.
A good photograph communicates something that words cannot through emotions, colour and even tone. The different types of tone in this photograph evoke a mixture of emotions and atmospheres . For example the darker tones create a mysterious, and dark atmosphere. The lighter and cooler colours make you feel warm and relaxed whereas the darker and warmer colours evoke fierce emotions. This image here has a great mixture of tone and therefore creates different emotions towards the viewer.
A good photograph can engage or capture the viewers attention. The more bold, unique and contrasting your image is, the more engaging it is. For it to be engaging the picture has to be interesting. For it to be interesting the elements in the picture need to be composed in a unique way. This draws attention to the photograph and the audience is engaged and interested.
A good photograph can make a person feel sympathy or sadness or happiness. All photograph have many stories behind them. This could be done by using a variety of different techniques, for example tone. A darker and dimmer tone would create and darker gloomier atmosphere however a brighter tone would create a happy cheerful atmosphere. The image beside creates a dim dark atmosphere as the tone is mostly grey. Also the way it is composed also creates the dim atmosphere. The girl is very centralised and isolated. However the lighter shades in the photograph create a bit of a lighter atmosphere.
I think that they are best shown in both alone and as as collection. For me it really depends on the type of photo it is. A more powerful, bold image should be shown alone as its interesting and keeps the viewers attention and all the focus is on it however photos that are basic and simpler or similar to others would stand out more as a collection. For example this image is quite bold and dramatic. Because of this it has been shown alone alone and for me its interesting, keeps my attention and makes me want to think a bit deeper about the photo.
I think that a photograph should make you want to ask questions and make you think a bit more in detail about the photograph however I don't think that the photograph should demand a response from the viewer because you can't force yourself to feel an emotion towards the photo. For example this photo doesn't really make me feel an emotion towards it.
I believe that a good photograph should have good composition and good lighting that goes well with the emotion portrayed. If the emotion that is trying trying to be portrayed is a sad then you would have to have quite dark and shadowy lighting and the opposite if it was a happy emotion. In this photo the composition and lighting suits the image well because the photograph is obviously trying to portray and eerie atmosphere and the dark lighting and good composition shows this.
